Biography of Prof. Hossam Badrawi
Prof. Hossam Badrawi, a prominent physician and a well known politician, President of the Badrawi Foundation for Education and Development. He is the founder and the honorary chairman of the Egyptian Council of Competitiveness ENCC. http://www.encc.org.eg/ and chaired the OB/GYN department in Cairo University’s Medical School 2009/2010.
Academically, He graduated from Cairo University kasr El Aini 1974, with an honors degree. He fulfilled his graduate studies during 1979-1983 in Wayne State University-Detroit-Michigan, in the use of scanning electron microscopy. He completed post-graduate studies at North Western University-Chicago-Illinois .In Boston University-Boston-Massachusetts, he had intense graduate studies in methodologies for development of curricula and study programs in education. His academic activities include the publication of more than 120 research papers and participations in 8 text books in his academic field.
In 2007, Prof. Badrawi received an honorary PhD. in science from Sunderland University in the United Kingdom, for outstanding work in higher education reform in the Middle East region. He is a visiting Professor in political science in center of Altiero Spinelli at University of Roma.
In 2014, Prof. Badrawi received a new award Honorary Fellowship from Cardiff University
in the UK 2014.
Politically, Prof Badrawi played an important central political role during the January revolution in Egypt. He was called for by the ex president of Egypt to chair the ruling party of Egypt NDP, on the 4th of February ,to save the situation, as he was always positively perceived by the political opposition and the society. He was known to be the opposition from inside and a true reformist. He announced his support to the revolution and resigned from the post 6 days after , when the ex president and his staff refused to listen to his political advice , to step down from presidency, and call for early presidential elections.
Prof. Badrawi was an elected member of the Egyptian Parliament and chaired the Committee of Education and Scientific Research for five years (2000 to 2005). He led the education reform initiatives in Egypt and is considered to be the primary sponsor of education reform throughout the country. His initiative for the move towards quality assurance and accreditation in education has
changed the language and implementation of reform of education in both school and higher education. He produced 29 policy papers in education that constitute the core of all current strategies of education nowadays
In 2001, he also chaired the joint committee of the Parliament for the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) legislation in Egypt and led key initiatives to ensure successful legislation of the law that was fundamental for Egypt’s ability to participate in the trade agreements with the European Union.
He participated in creating the National Council for Human Rights in Egypt 2004, served as a member, chaired the Social Human Rights Committee, and was the author of one of the most important reports of this council 2009, about the human rights situation in Egypt in the process of UPR. http://www.upregypt-nchr.org/
He is a founder member of the board of Arab Parliamentarians against Corruption; a foundation created to fight corruption in the region and created Parliamentarian against corruption in Egypt 2003. He also chaired an initiative for Arab Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy – Parliamentary Perspective with the UNESCO. He also chaired the Parliamentary Network of the World Bank (PNoWB)/MENA chapter during 2003-2006, an initiative developed by the World Bank.
In the privet sector, Badrawi is an entrepreneur. He started the first healthcare management organizations company in Egypt that is currently one of the largest HMOs in the private sector 1989. He is also a founder, board member and strategic shareholder in Nile Badrawi Hospital, one of the largest privat hospitals in Cairo. www.nilebadrawi.com.
Socially, Dr. Badrawi chairs the Badrawi Foundation for Education and Development, philanthropic family-run foundation working for social and educational development, and Takatof NGO building schools and developing human resources. www.takatof.org.
