Sleeping between science and language
Hossam Badrawi and his fairy girlfriend
This is a conversation with my friend, an angel from heaven made by my imagination in the form of a genie, about sleep. I imagined this friendly fairy, intelligent, witty, light-hearted, knowledgeable in the inner workings of things and language, aware of what souls hide, possessing provocations and cues and explaining the language with stories and tales.
I told her: I will talk to you with knowledge and you will talk to me about sleep and its surroundings. You are my visitor in it sometimes and in my health. She said: Come, let us dive into the conditions of sleep, and surround it and its conditions, and I am at your command in the explanation and its types.
I said: Sleep is a natural state of relaxation for living organisms, during which voluntary movements and a sense of what is happening around them decrease.
Sleep is considered a change in the state of consciousness, not a loss of consciousness, as in the case of sedation or coma. It is a natural phenomenon to reorganize brain activity and other vital activities in living organisms, and humans cannot live without sleep. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, and during sleep many complex activities occur on the level of the brain and the body in general. Some vital functions are more active during sleep, and in the language of mobile invented by man, it is as if it is a stage that the human body needs to charge its battery and energies, during which some functions are downloaded and digital programs are renewed in the brain, liver, tissues, cells, and so on.
My friend said: In the Arabic language and without the details of science, the stages of sleep that we know are remission, recumbency, drowsiness, weaning, slumber, narcolepsy, slumber, falling asleep, drowsiness, and hibernation.
I smiled and said to her: So the scientific division of sleep is easier than language!!!
She said: Increase my knowledge of science, and I will guide you to the meanings of language in sleep.
I said: Sleep is regulated in specific areas of the brain by the influence of hormones such as melatonin, which originate in the pituitary gland [hypothalamus], which is the area that regulates sleep time. Based on studies conducted on brain waves during sleep, sleep has been divided into three stages, and the apparent to the student is rapid and non-rapid eye movement during sleep with a study of brain electricity.
She said: What does that mean?
I said: The first stages of sleep are the eye movement during which it is not fast, and then the stage of rapid movement, and the cycles continue during sleep. Each stage takes from 5 to 15 minutes before entering the third stage sleep, which takes about 10 minutes and sometimes extends to an hour. In the first stage, the first yawning and sleeping stage, the eyes are closed but it is easy to wake up from them. In the second stage, which is the stage of light sleep, the level of awareness of external events decreases, the number of heartbeats decreases and the body prepares for deep sleep, and in the third stage, the sleep is deep and it is difficult to wake up from it. At this stage, the body repairs itself, new cells, tissues and muscles grow and the body’s immune resources improve, and children spend 50% of their sleep at this stage. This cycle, which takes about 90 minutes, is repeated throughout the period of sleep that the body needs to reprogram itself and its growth and repair any damage that occurred in it. The depth of sleep is affected by the degree of lighting and noise. For it to be healthy for the brain, it must take place in the darkness of the night and not in the light of day, and in a stillness that does not awaken the brain and the senses.
She said: And when do dreams occur?
I said: Dreams take only a few minutes out of every 90 minutes, after which a new cycle of stages begins. And dreams are a clear application of Einstein’s theory of the relativity of time. The time of dreams has nothing to do with the time of the two, so what we think of as hours may be seconds, and the mind is able to transcend time and link the past to the present and retrieve and elicit events with those whom God has passed away and move to anywhere in the universe.. during sleep everything is possible..
She said: How many hours do we need to sleep healthy?
I said: The period that an individual needs to sleep varies from one person to another, and it may be an 8-hour period as an average of the necessary sleep period per day. Research says that lack of sleep may lead to an increase in the incidence of some diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attack and cancer. There is a high possibility that the immunity decreases in general in the sleepless. The need for children to sleep longer hours has a scientific reasoning for their need for growth, and the need for the elderly to sleep less hours also becomes logical.
She said: You increased me knowledge and knowledge of the language of scholars. Of course, the Arabic linguists did not have the scientific means to make them look at sleep with your view, but they named the stages of sleep as they observed and described them. And since I speak of language, my speech with you will be full of poetic allusions and allusions, and rhyming balances, so bear me while you listen to me.
I said: Bring what you have, O writer, O poet, O fairy.
She said: I remind you of the description of sleep and its types, not of its stages and causes: remission, recumbency, drowsiness, sleepiness, slumber, narcolepsy, slumber, falling asleep, drowsiness, and hibernation.
To sleep in the language is to take refuge in the dormitory, that is, the bedroom, in order to sleep. And the best time is the beginning of the night. The mention of sleep in the Holy Qur’an “they sleep little during the night” Al-Dhariyat (17). As for lying down, it means in the language lying on one side with the support on the palm, the elbow, the ulna, or the entire arm. In short, it is said in the Egyptian vernacular on the dormitory that it is “bowed”.
As for drowsiness, its origin is drowsiness, which means that his senses have become numb. Including the misfortune of any say. Including the market fell asleep any stagnated and Bart goods. And drowsiness includes calmness, lethargy, heaviness in the eyelids, and lack of concentration in what is heard, said, or spoken. Drowsiness was mentioned twice in the Holy Qur’an: “It Agshekm drowsiness safe from it and come down on you from the sky water to purify it and you go wrath of Satan and connects to your hearts and prove to his feet” (Anfal). And in Surah Al-Imran he says, “Then He sent down upon you after the gloom a security of drowsiness overcoming a group of you.”
.
As for sleep, it is the same as drowsiness, but it is a simple and alert snooze, which is repeated in a succession of delicious laziness. And it is said: “The person’s age,” i.e. I took a short nap. And in the Noble Qur’an, describing God Almighty: “Neither a year nor sleep shall take him away” (Al-Baqarah).
The meaning is clear. It is said: The eyes that have a hoar on its end, and the eyelids that have a tooth at its end.
I said: Say it too.
She said: By God, I would not say anything of this except that it is a means of communicating with you, my friend from among the human race. She added: The lantern is extending the sight far in Sarhan and then returning to full vigilance in short and fast sequences, and the person is neither asleep nor awake. And its examples in the language are many, including the ringing of birds: that is, it stood still in the sky, spreading its wings, and did not go soaring nor falling down. And the word “sleep” is linguistically carved from the words “sleep” and “awakening.” It is the stage in which a person closes his eyes and appears as if he is sleeping, but in fact he remains aware with the senses of hearing and touch. Sleep may be followed by narcolepsy and full wakefulness may follow.
And the genie continued, saying: As for the drowsiness, it is the beginning of sleep prior to falling asleep, as a result of the monotony of shaking or rocking, such as during travel on a train or car, or a child falling to sleep.
Then comes the slumber and its linguistic root of the verb slept with various meanings, the most common of which is that a person lies down and lies on the bed in preparation for sleep or for rest, and the mention of lying in Surat Ahl al-Kahf: “And you think they are awake while they are lying.” Sometimes the slumber of a people is an act of the ruling system, when minds are shackled, determination wanes, ideas dry up, creativity lacks, and competencies evaporate. And the country becomes a place of rest.
I said: O fairy, you are also political!
She gave me a smile and continued: The hiccup is so called because it is repeated more than once in the same night in succession with (hibernation). Cree is a vessel for dreams, illusions, inspiration, visions, suggestive thoughts, connection to the soul, feeling from a distance, and nightmares. And it came in the poem Al-Atlal: “A wakefulness that overthrew the dreams of the slanderer, and the night and the night took over a friend.”
I told her: Do you understand me with the meanings, the descriptions, and the introduction of art, politics and history in the explanation of the words.
And to meet.
